Computational Models of Valveless Pumping Using the Immersed Boundary Method

چکیده
Mathematical models of valveless pumping can be represented by either a closed loop system or an open tube system. In this paper, we present a three-dimensional model of valveless pumping in a closed loop system. We also present a two-dimensional model using an open elastic cylinder contained in a rigid tank. In both models, we take the periodic compress-and-release action at the asymmetric location of the soft tube and observe the existence of a net flow and the important features of valveless pumping that have been reported in the previous models or experiments. The innovative idea of this work is that we explain the existence of a net flow by introducing the concept of the signed area of the flow-pressure loop over one cycle, which represents the power in the system. The direction and the magnitude of a net flow can also be explained by the sign and the amount of power, which is work done on the fluid by the fluid pressure and the elastic wall over one period, respectively. ∗Corresponding author. Modeling Valveless Pumping Mechanisms
Austin J Baird: Modeling valveless pumping mechanisms (Under the direction of Laura Miller) Several mechanisms of valveless pumping are studied numerically. The discussion begins with an introduction into the two well-known driving mechanisms of flow in valveless tubes: impedance pumping and peristalsis. Flow generated from peristalsis and impedance pumping is examined using the immersed bounda...
متن کاملTwo-Dimensional Simulations of Valveless Pumping Using the Immersed Boundary Method
Flow driven by pumping without valves is examined, motivated by biomedical applications: cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the human fetus before the development of the heart valves. The direction of flow inside a loop of tubing which consists of (almost) rigid and flexible parts is investigated when the boundary of one end of the flexible segment is forced periodically in time. Despite t...
متن کاملOn the dynamic suction pumping of blood cells in tubular hearts
Around the third week after gestation in embryonic development, the human heart consists only of a valvless tube, unlike a fully developed adult heart, which is multi-chambered. At this stage in development, the heart valves have not formed and so net flow of blood through the heart must be driven by a different mechanism. It is hypothesized that there are two possible mechanisms that drive blo...
متن کاملBifurcations in valveless pumping techniques from a coupled fluid-structure-electrophysiology model in heart development
We explore an embryonic heart model that couples electrophysiology and muscle-force generation to flow induced using a 2D fluid-structure interaction framework based on the immersed boundary method. The propagation of action potentials are coupled to muscular contraction and hence the overall pumping dynamics. In comparison to previous models, the electro-dynamical model does not use prescribed...
متن کاملModelling of the Dynamics of an immersed body in a microchannel with stenosis using the immersed boundary method
In the present study, the combination of lattice Boltzmann and immersed boundary methods is used to simulate the motion and deformation of a flexible body. Deformation of the body is studied in microchannel with stenosis and the effect of the flexibility changes on its deformation is investigated. The obtained results in the present manuscript show that by increasing the elasticity modulus, the...
